Members of Hythe Regional School Council present to Board
Hythe Regional School Council members Sheri Funk and Amy Sandboe, along with Principal Holly Gould, presented on the importance of having a regional junior high school in the community.
They touched on many topics, including: communities the school serves; the array of sports teams and opportunities for students; and how the school prepares students for high school.
Hythe Regional School, which is located approximately 60 kilometres northwest of the city of Grande Prairie, serves students from the areas of:
- Hythe
- Kelly Lake
- Valhalla
- Beaverlodge
- Demmitt
- Horse Lake First Nation
- Lymburn
The Council members spoke about how having teachers, with a range of knowledge and experience, allows the school to provide a diverse education with more option classes and extra-curricular sports and activities. They also shared some insight into what could happen if the current student population were to decrease. "Reducing student populations could dilute the richness and variety of learning opportunities; reduce the availability of learning support staff; eliminate K&E classes; limit sports and extra-curricular opportunities; and decrease enrollments and high school completion rates across all communities."
