Board discusses proof of vaccination for PWPSD staff and visitors

As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to loom over the province, PWPSD is continuously working to adjust requirements to stay aligned with the Government of Alberta.

After Alberta Health Services (AHS) stated they are encouraging school boards to implement vaccination policies, the division was faced with several questions; from both staff and the community.

After discussing concerns about the topic, the following motion was made,

Given the recent announcements regarding School Authorities being asked by the Minister of Education and the Minister of Health to consider a policy regarding employees showing proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test (and to recognize the Board's role in ensuring the safety of its staff and students); the Board direct administration to explore and collect additional information regarding such a policy and report back to the Board on or before October 28, 2021.

The motion was carried unanimously.

If such a policy is implemented, it would apply to any non-student over the age of 18 entering PWPSD facilities.

PWPSD Board thanked for years of service

As the PWPSD Board's term comes to an end, Trustees and members of Administration reflected on its many accomplishments and the hard work that made the past four years successful.

With great diversity throughout the boardroom, the Board Chair, Vice Chair and seven Trustees brought a variety of perspectives and values to PWPSD. Although Trustees may not have always agreed, Board Chair Kari Scheers said debates were always handled respectfully and professionally.

COVID-19 presented many unusual challenges. The Board provided great leadership and continued to face each challenge head-on until their last meeting on October 7, 2021.

As the Board celebrated its end of term, retiring Board Trustees Sharilyn Anderson (Ward 2), Kim Moodie (Ward 4), and Bob Knull (Ward 8) were thanked for their many terms served as members of the Board.

Committee and meeting reports

  • Trustee Anderson reported on the ASBA Zone 1 meeting. Elections for the new Board will be held in November, and she invites all current and incoming Trustees to run.

  • Trustee Anderson also acknowledged Natascha Okimaw as this year's recipient of the PWPSD Friends of Education nomination.
